The Matian review: out of this world

Rating: ★★★★☆ The Martian is everything the Interstellar wanted to be but better. Even if you have already read the book, you will be surprised of how good this movie is, truly out of this world.

Mark Watney (Matt Damon) is an astronaut botanist who got stranded on planet Mars. Using his wits, skills and spirit, he found a way to survive on the hostile planet while hoping someone will come to save him.

All hopes are not lost however, members of NASA and his team work very hard to bring him home, even his teammates hatch their own plan for a daring rescue mission to get him back home.

If you have read the book, then you won’t be disappointed. The movie is very faithful to the book, and they executed it to another level that you will be able to get Mark’s character even better.

In the book, Mark’s character swears a lot more, and he claims to be a botanist instead of a mechanical engineer AND a botanist that he is in the book. He also gets into less trouble in the movie compared to the book, but again, the director has to squeeze a lot of things into a less than 3 hour movie.

Matt Damon did an exceptional job making Mark Watney’s character into the big screen and I think he deserves an Oscar nod for his display here.

If you have seen Cast Away, starring Tom Hanks, where a man gets stranded in an island managed to survive using his wits. This is almost similar, only Matt Damon is not stranded in an island, but a hostile planet instead.

So, is this movie good? how good is this compared to other movies with this tone? I’d say Interstellar was good, The Martian is great. You won’t regret spending your hard earned dollars to see this movie in the theater.
